Isabella Brown, Coppa Rage finish 2nd at Nationals

Isabella Brown has played for the Philadelphia Soccer Club for four years. Her teammates have been the same for the past two or three years and last week the Coppa Rage achieved their greatest accomplishment – finishing second in the U16 United States National Championship Series in Bradenton, Florida.

“It was really great,” Brown said. “We had a fun time as a team. I think we’ve grown to become really close and more like a family. It was just a time to put all of our hard work into play. We really showed our talent and our work ethic as a team and we performed.

“It’s a big accomplishment, I would say. I mean, second in the nation is a pretty big title. Obviously we’re going to come back next year and work hard and get back to where we were and hopefully be first.”

They went 3-2 in their five games last week. After losing their first game against La Roca, 1-0, they responded with three straight wins – 2-1 over Cincinnati Cup Gold, 4-1 over Louisiana Fire and 1-0 against Broomfield Soccer Club. The tournament ended with a 2-0 loss to La Roca in the championship.

Brown scored the lone goal in the 1-0 semifinal win over Broomfield. In the sixth minute she found the top right corner and that stood as the game-winner to send her team to the championship.

“I think Maura Day threw in the ball and Gianna Rivera – she had a really good turn on the defender,” Brown recalled. “She passed me the ball and I took a touch and hit it. It went into the upper 90 corner from maybe 20 yards out, right outside the 18. I just jumped into Gianna’s arms and everyone just ran towards each other and we all hugged and celebrated and screamed together.

“It was definitely a great experience and a fun time. Our whole team celebrating was a really special moment for us.”

The team features plenty of familiar faces from the Reporter/Times Herald/Montgomery Media area. Brown is an Oreland resident and a rising junior at Springside Chesnut Hill Academy, along with Brigid McDonald and Elena Franklin, who are from Abington and Upper Dublin, respectively. Abington’s Maura Day, Archbishop Wood’s Ava DeGeorge and Giula Nevtroski and Hatboro-Horsham’s Emma Levin all play for the Coppa Rage under head coach Tom DeGeorge, who holds the same position at Archbishop Wood.

The Coppa Rage qualified for the National Championship Series by winning their National League bracket in March in North Carolina.

The team also won the Pennsylvania state championship and a tournament in Bethesda, Maryland this season. They reached United States Youth Soccer Eastearn Regional semifinals and competed in the top bracket of the Jefferson Cup in Virginia.

The players will head back to their respective high schools in a couple weeks for the fall season. In November, they’ll get back together and start working toward their goal of claiming the top spot in the country.

“We’re just going to enjoy high school, work hard,” Brown said, “and then we’ll be back in November for a few tournaments in the fall. Then National League starts up again in December and we’ll be back on our grind.”

Main Line girls soccer squads look strong again this fall

The Main Line high school girls’ soccer scene is traditonally full of strong teams, and last fall was no exception, even with the COVID-shortened season. Top teams included Lower Merion (12-0, Central League champions), Conestoga (7-3-2), Radnor (8-4), Archbishop Carroll (8-4 overall, 5-1 Catholic League) and Villa Maria Academy (8-4).
Here’s a look at the Main Line girls soccer teams as they begin the 2021 fall campaign:
Lower Merion lost a couple of key players to graduation last spring – co-MVP Maya Masotti and All-Central League first team goalie Audrey Brown – but still has a solid cast of key returnees.
One key returning Ace is junior midfielder Elly Slensky, who was a first team All-Central League and All-Main Line selection last fall. She was a strong all-around performer for the Central League champions, and added scoring punch as well (three goals, three assists in 12 games).
“Elly helps support our forwards and has an endless motor,” said Lower Merion head coach Kevin Ries.
A couple of returning seniors who received second team All-Main Line girls soccer honors last fall are defender Roberta Moger and forward Hannah Blodget.
“Hannah plays hard, is unselfish and has a knack for the goal,” said Ries. “Roberta is a four-year starter in the back and controls the wing.”
Other returning Aces to watch include junior midfielder Emma Burke, junior forward Grace Downey and junior defender Sadie Cohen. Downey received All-Main Line honorable mention last fall.
“Emma works tirelessly in the midfield and protects our backline,” said Ries. “Grace is a tough, strong player on the ball. She can finish with both feet. Sadie is a great 1v1 defender with speed.”
Conestoga features 16 seniors and seven juniors, many of whom were part of the Pioneers’ 2019 trip to the PIAA 4A state final. Key players include senior center forward Abby Klebe, who scored 12 goals last year and was a first team All Main Line and All-Central pick last fall; senior center defender Haleigh Wintersteen, who was a second team All-Main Line and All-Central selection; senior defensive midfielder Megan Daly; senior attacking midfielder Emily Burgess; junior center defender Mia Galrao; and senior outside back Eli Mayock.
Pioneer head coach Ben Wilson said, “Abby is an extremely fast, high-pressure forward, who has great strength on the ball and composed finishing ability. Haleigh poses a great threat to teams on set-plays, and her authoritative style of defending brings great confidence to the team. Megan is a great safety-blanket who shuts-down counter-attacking opportunities, wins tackles, and distributes the ball extremely well. Emily possesses great confidence on the ball and is extremely explosive taking players on in the final third to get to goal or create opportunities for others. Mia has become a staple in the backline, she’s great in possession to help launch attacks from the back and a very strong composed defender.
Eli has incredible speed and a high work-rate, brings intensity and high-pressure ability whether she is playing outside back, wing, or forward, and is always a goal scoring threat with her hard shots and crosses.”
Radnor features a trio of key seniors in midfielder Emily Daiutolo, forward Jane Daiutolo and midfielder Kate Boujoukos. Emily Daiutolo is a multiple time All-Central League honoree, was an All-Main Line first team pick last fall and was team MVP her sophomore season. Boujoukos and Jane Daiutolo received second team All-Main Line honors last fall.
“Emily will lead a talented midfield and provide both defensive stability and offensive awareness to spark the attack,” said Radnor head coach Jake Solderitsch. “Jane is an exceptional 1v1 attacker with a nose for the goal and an equal willingness to create chances for her teammates. Kate’s physical presence combined with her endurance to run box to box throughout the game grinds down opponents and provides reliability and consistency that her teammates can always count on.”
Haverford High School has a trio of solid captains who have been varsity performers for four years – forward Mackenzie Lacey, midfielder Paige Snell, and defender Emma Lonergan. Lacey and Snell received All-Main Line honorable mention last fall and have received All-Central League honors as well. Other seniors to watch include midfielder/defender Maura Dougherty, midfielder Leah Hayes, goalie Madison Kantawala, defender Campbell Carlin, forward Erin O’Brien and forward Akie Kobayashi.
Harriton has a trio of seniors to watch this fall – Camilla Trotti, Josie Becker and defender Kira McDonnell. Two other key Rams are sophomore midfielders Emma Moureaud and Ariel Katz, both of whom received All-Main Line honorable mention for their efforts last fall.
“Camilla returns to our backline, providing leadership, and her ability to engage in Harriton’s attack will be needed,” said Harriton head coach Jeff Rhodes. “Josie’s enthusiasm and ability to step up big when it counts help anchors our attack. Kira helps anchor our defense – we return the entire defensive line. Kira’s ability to read the game well and shut down attacks will help the Rams prevent scoring opportunities.”
Baldwin School has a solid number of key returning players this fall, including senior forward and co-captain Clara Page, a three-sport athlete and captain who is committed to UCal Berkeley for lacrosse; senior midfielder and co-captain Josie Stockett; senior forward Brianna Wright; senior midfielders Callie Stoltz and Grace Halak; and junior defenders Maddie Davis and Ana Naylor.
“Clara is a strong target forward,” said Baldwin head coach Adrian Cox. “She plays well with her back to the goal, links well with midfielders and can put the ball in the net. Josie has good field vision and dribbling skills, and can create her own shot off the dribble and makes smart decisions. Brianna is a tireless worker and extremely versatile. She is a two-way player who creates opportunities on goal and hustles relentlessly on defense using her speed and quickness. Callie is a talented and physical player with an excellent shot from long distance. She is a fearless tackler and strong ball winner. Grace is a smart and selfless player. She understands her role, is a good decision maker and provides great cover for teammates. Maddie is a hard worker and super competitive, has excellent recovery speed and solves emergencies on defense. Ana is a tenacious individual defender with a hate-to-lose mentality. She anticipates plays well and will be instrumental in building our attack out of the back.”
Villa Maria Academy has a couple of key midfielders to watch this fall – junior captain Kaelyn Wolfe and senior second-year captain Peyton Coron. Wolfe is a two-time All-AACA player, was a first team All-Main Line selection last fall and led the Hurricanes in scoring as a sophomore. Coron is a three-time all-league selection and received All-Main Line honors last fall.
“Kaelyn is explosive with the ball with excellent field vision,” said Villa Maria head coach Gary Christopher. “Peyton is technical, fast and dynamic with the ball.”
Archbishop Carroll has three key players to watch this fall – sophomore central mid Olivia Stout; senior center mid Reagan Duzy, a four-year starter who received All-Catholic League honors last fall; and junior forward Ella Wright.
Carroll head coach Tom Quintois said, “Olivia is a very technical player capable of creating and finishing. She possesses an high soccer IQ and sees the field with the best of them. Reagan is a very disciplined, focused leader who is very skilled. Ella is an athletic, skilled player who capable of playing virtually every position on the field at a high level. This year she is taking on more of the offensive load.”
Episcopal Academy features eight returning starters, led by senior midfielder and co-captain Kendal Elison, senior forward and co-captain Bella Piselli, senior center back Makayla Cawley, junior goalie Maya Naimoli, sophomore center back Natalie Magnotta and sophomore midfielder Ava Roberts. Last fall, Piselli received second team All-Main Line selection, and Elison and Naimoli received All-Main Line honorable mention. Other players to watch include senior center back Lauren Gage, senior forward Alexa Capozzoli, senior defender Julia Cunningham, senior forward Erin Cunningham, senior defender Morgan Stickley and sophomore forward Lainey McGonagle.
Academy of Notre Dame has seven returning seniors who according to ND head coach Bill Bradley will provide valuable leadership and experience, including their four captains – midfielder Sarah Kichula, forward Caeli Maher, forward Julia Rossi and back Mia Vittanzo.
“We have four incoming first-year players who will get playing time as well,” said Bradley. “All of our roster has played travel soccer at some point in their career, including some of the premier travel clubs in the area like FC Europa, Penn Fusion and Lower Merion.”
Agnes Irwin, which posted a 3-2 record last fall, has a solid trio of senior captains, including midfielder Belle Fusco (who received All-Main Line honorable mention in 2020), midfielder Carly Wilson and defender Sydney Wilson. Other Owls to watch include junior goalie Morgan O’Donnell, sophomore defender Abby Ballinger, sophomore defender Campbell Collins, junior midfielder Kennedy Kelleher and sophomore midfielder Lily Fusco.
Merion Mercy Academy features some good midfielders this fall, including senior tri-captain Mary Kate Lopresti (who received All-Main Line honorable mention in 2020), senior tri-captain Hannah Mishinkash and junior Cara Comey.
“Mary Kate’s creativity and competitiveness as a two-way player will help us at midfield and into the attacking third,” said Merion Mercy head coach Brett McGovern. “Hannah’s ability to win the ball and calmly possess in the midfield will help us as we try to build an attack. Cara’s playmaking abilities will help us in trying to penetrate tough opposing defenses.”
Barrack Hebrew Academy has a trio of seniors to watch this fall – striker Jessie Singer, Dayna Felger and midfielder Arielle Zabusky. “Jessie has great ability to create space and scoring opportunities, and attacks defenders with speed and creativity,” said Barrack head coach Keith Bradburd. “Dayna has the ability to create her own goal-scoring opportunities, and is willing to take on defenders and challenge the goalkeeper with quick decision-making ability. Arielle has superb field vision and is able to distribute the ball and also score goals. Her field awareness and strength on the ball will be the key for our team to maintain possession.”

Lansdale Catholic dominates second half in win over Souderton

LANSDALE >> Lansdale Catholic scored the first three goals of the second half to break a halftime tie and pull away from Souderton in a 6-3 win Tuesday afternoon at Lansdale Catholic High School.

“We just talked about we only have 15 girls and we’re here to play together and play for God because we’re a Catholic school and win together,” LC captain Nicole Mezzatesta said of the halftime message. “We just wanted to show who we are and come out strong.

“We communicated and dropped back on D. We worked together to play through the back and we got a couple through-balls through to score. That’s how we went up.”

A pair of fortunate bounces sandwiched around a beautiful play helped the Crusaders (2-0) score three straight goals and take a 5-2 lead early in the second half.

Bella Wack scored the go-ahead goal from midfield. Her kick from just inside the offensive half of the field bounced inside the box, over the Souderton keeper’s head and into the net to break a 2-2 tie.

Mezzatesta quickly added another goal to double the lead to 4-2. Emily Simpson sent a pass up the middle of the field and Mezzatesta perfectly timed her run to stay onsides. She finished her breakaway with a score to the right side of the goal.

“It bounced off of me and went to Em,” Mezzatesta said. “Em played a through-ball and I just dribbled until the goalie came out and placed it in the corner.”

Simpson made it 5-2 when she crashed the net during a Delaney King shot. King’s strike hit the post and bounced in front of the net, where Simpson gathered the ball and buried it for a comfortable three-goal lead.

Lansdale Catholic got on the board first when Megan Steinbach took advantage of a miscommunication between Souderton defenders. When neither of Big Red’s players went for the ball, Steinbach gained possession, turned and put the ball just under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead.

“I think overall mentality and approach was where we shot ourselves in the foot,” Souderton coach Ian Smith said. “Early on we went down a goal. After that it felt like we were chasing and we had moments when we were sharp and we had moments when we were running around like chickens with our heads cut off. Sometimes that’s to be expected in the first game of the season. At least we know we have stuff to work on.”

The Indians (0-1) responded with the next two goals. Alivia Beresovoy tied the game at one and Avery Nogami put Souderton ahead.

Mezzatesta tied the game just before halftime.

“I just saw a through-ball and I went with it,” she explained. “I placed it in the corner so the goalie couldn’t dive and get it.”

Nogami scored her second goal of the game in the second half to get Souderton within two, 5-3. Kaitlyn DeCandilo sent a corner kick into the box and Nogami put it directly into the back of the net.

“Senior captain, huge piece,” Smith said of Nogami’s role on the team. “Last year I joked she’s probably the most fouled player in Suburban One. She just throws herself at everything and she gets a lot of goals like that, too. That’s how she got the goal on the corner kick. When she steps foot on the field she gives 110% every time and that’s all you can ask as a coach. We’ll work on getting that mentality collectively as a team and we’ll build from there.”

King finished off the scoring with a goal to extend LC’s advantage back to three, 6-3.

The third time proved the charm for the Pennridge girls soccer team.

After falling in trips to the PIAA final in 2011 and 2018, green was finally gold in 2020, as Leah Malone’s double-overtime strike gave the Rams the state Class 4A championship.

With a large returning group back from the side that celebrated in Hershey, Pennridge has a chance to one again achieve big things in 2021.

The Rams graduated just three starters for last year’s 16-1-0 squad, returning a trio of All-SOL Colonial Division selections in senior Riley Hepler and sophomores Liv Grenda and Anna Croyle. Senior Malone and sophomore Sophie Craig were second-team picks, senior Sierra Shaeffer returns at goalkeeper while senior Emily Kriney is back from injury.

The rest of the Colonial Division will not make thing easy. Central Bucks West handed the Rams their lone loss of 2020 and have all-state senior forward Taylor Moyer back. North Penn’s hopes to bounce back are helped by the return of all-division second-team goalie senior Anna Fiore. Souderton split its 10 matches last year (5-5-0) and Big Red is looking to do better than .500.

Abington edged Hatboro-Horsham for the SOL Liberty crown, both went on to earn district wins – HH reaching the quarterfinals, the Ghosts making the semifinals – and still have their sights on topping the division standings. Wissahickon has hopes on getting involved in the division race.

In the Philadelphia Catholic League, Archbishop Carroll and Archbishop Wood both reached their respective classes’ PIAA tournaments – Carroll making its first-ever state appearance. Wood graduated all-state midfielder Paige Hoeger but has eight starters back as the Vikings look for their first PCL title since 2016.

Lansdale Catholic, meanwhile, aims to return to the upper portion of the PCL standings are finishing 3-3-0 in league play in 2020.

Gwynedd Mercy wants to keep its momentum from making the District 1-3A final while in the PAC an experience Methacton squad hopes to build off going 6-4-3 last season.

Abington 1, Upper Dublin 0 >> Lily Gray scored off a ball sent into the 18-yard box by Maura Day as Abington earned its first win in the SOL Liberty Division matchup Thursday.

Day finished with 19 completed passes and seven shots on net while Carley Slavin had 24 complete passes for the Galloping Ghosts (1-1-0, 1-0-0 division). Mei Mei Chang had 13 completed passes and three shots on net with Gray having six complete passes and put four shots on net.

With the loss, Upper Dublin dropped to 0-1-1 (0-1-0).

North Penn 2, Central Bucks West 0 >> Lauren Blanch scored twice in the first half — Kylie Holmes with the assist on the first tally — and North Penn claimed a shutout SOL Colonial Division win.

Gwynedd Mercy 2, Nazareth Academy 2 >> Gwynedd Mercy rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to earn an AACA draw with visiting Nazareth Academy.

Riley Morris pulled the Monarchs (2-0-1, 0-0-1 league) to within 2-1 in the 55th minute while Keira Cassidy’s tally off a Kat Pluck assist leveled the contest  in the 64th minute.

Nazareth Academy (0-0-1, 0-0-1) took a 1-0 lead on an Amanda Millevoi goal in the 17th minute then went up two while Devon Cheeseman converted a penalty kick in the 22nd minute.

Pandas goalie Grace Sullivan made 12 saves while GMA keeper Ellie Verrill had six saves.

Quakertown 2, Plymouth Whitemarsh 0 >>  Quakertown scored a goal in each half to claim a SOL Liberty Division win.

Plymouth Whitemarsh sophomore goalkeeper Caitlyn Dinh had 12 saves.

Central Bucks South 3, Souderton 0 >> Visiting Central Bucks South scored all three of its goals in the first half to win the SOL Colonial Division contest.

“Alexis Stefanowicz (junior) worked throughout the match to provide energy for the team in the middle of the field and helped the Indians regain their footing to keep the second half scoreless,” Souderton coach Ian Smith said. “Abby Kolb (junior) worked tirelessly at the outside back position, turning possession into chances early on in the match, and eventually putting in a consistent shift defensively.”

Upper Moreland 1, Lower Moreland 0 >> Emma Frasca scored late in the second half while Upper Moreland goalie Natalie Walton made four saves to post a shutout as the Golden Bears began their season with an SOL Freedom win.

“This was a great competitive match — our ‘first game jitters’ showed a bit in the first half and we played a bit reactive rather than taking control,” Upper Moreland coach Lisa Benvenuto said. “The momentum of the game was back and forth for both teams, and both teams had opportunities but just did not capitalize. Lower Moreland is a young team, but they should not be taken lightly.”

Frasca’s tally came at 71:39 as Brooke Lobban’s pass through backline of Lower Moreland (0-2-0, 0-1-0 division) took a deflection off a defender and Frasca got to the ball and proceeded to put it into the back of the net.

Perk Valley 11, Norristown 0 >> Perkiomen Valley’s Kieran Cabot collected a hat trick while Nicole-Bottomlye-Lytle and Lily Tremba both had a goal and three assists in the Vikings’ PAC Liberty win over Norristown.

Cheltenham does it all in win over Norristown

WEST NORRITON >> Cheltenham put together a dominant performance in Monday night’s 6-0 win over Norristown at Norristown Area High School.

The Panthers (2-1) maintained possession for a majority of the game and put 30 shots on goal. Six different players scored in the win.

“(The offense) brought it tonight for sure,” Cheltenham coach Leah Matusow said. “Something we’ve been talking about a lot is finishing. We’re getting the shots. Tonight we finished and it was a beautiful thing to see. A lot of good one-two passes, good connections and it was nice to finally put the ball in the net.”

“I think we connected pass really well,” Cheltenham’s Amelia Fishman said. “We just put them together and that’s what got us all of our goals. I think we just worked really well together.”

The first goal came in the sixth minute. Lily Crocker sent a cross into the middle of the field and it deflected off of Lola Jahhs. Taden Versaw-Barnes was there to grab the deflection and deposit it into the goal.

Cheltenham’s lead doubled in the 29th minute. Mimi Williamson took a free kick from just outside the 18. Her cross went to the far post, where Versaw-Barnes headed it to the middle of the field. Jahhs finished to make it a 2-0 Panthers lead.

Fishman finished off the scoring for the first half with a 38th-minute goal. Versaw-Barnes sent a corner kick into the box. Fishman eventually gathered the loose ball and lifted it over the keeper to make it a 3-0 game.

In the second half, Cheltenham had two defensive players score – captains Kayla Brockington and Sophie Peck. Brockington made it 4-0 in the 54th minute when she hit the post, gathered her rebound and found the back of the net. Peck raced down the sideline, dribbled around the keeper, and scored to make it 6-0 in the 86th minute.

“They don’t get too many opportunities (to score),” Matusow said. “When they’re there they try to finish, which is great. They’ve been amazing and fantastic leaders and we’re proud to have them as our captains.”

Maya Schwartz also scored in the second half for Cheltenham. Her 62nd-minute penalty kick made it a 5-0 game.

“Everyone is capable,” Fishman said of six different girls scoring. “I think everyone on this team has a great foot. It’s just how we get it off. I think everyone on our team is doing a great job.”

The Panthers defense wasn’t tested often, but made the plays necessary to record a second consecutive shutout. Brockington, Peck, Kennedy Williams and Malena Vila were among defenders who made smart plays throughout the night to keep the ball out of harm’s way.

“We have a dominant defense,” Matusow said. “Our captains Sophie Peck and Kayla Brockington do an outstanding job back there. They’re leaders from start to finish. They lead in the back and it’s nice girls come off the bench and bring the same intensity. It was a complete game, which was really nice.”

Goalkeeper Claudia Morales was busy for Norristown (0-3). She stopped 24 shots to keep the game from getting even more lopsided.

Malone collects goal, assist as Pennridge shuts out North Penn

TOWAMENCIN >> Expectations remain high for the Pennridge girls soccer team. But the standard the defending PIAA Class 4A champs expect from themselves may be even higher.

A goal in each half gave the visiting Rams a 2-0 Suburban One League Colonial Division victory over North Penn on a sweltering Tuesday afternoon. But as she left the Crawford Stadium turf, senior Leah Malone shared her side’s feeling that it was a less than satisfactory performance.

“Honestly that was unacceptable from us,” said Malone, “I know we’re capable of so much more than what we just put out here and honestly that’s just not good enough.”

Malone was involved in both goals as the Rams improved to 4-0-0 (2-0-0 division). The High Point commit’s cross found Emily Kriney in front for the opening tally in the seventh minute. The Rams – ranked third in United Soccer Coaches latest fall girls national poll – finally got some more distance from the Knights when Malone struck in the 60th minute off an assist from Liv Grenda.

“We had to do so much more work because of simple mistakes that shouldn’t be happening in games like this,” Malone said. “And we know that going into the rest of our season we got to clean that up because teams are going to make us pay for that if we don’t.”

A strong effort from North Penn goalkeeper Anna Fiore prevented the Rams from a higher goal total while the best scoring opportunity for the Knights (1-2-0, 1-1-0) came with them trailing 1-0 in the first half as Lauren Branch’s shot hit the crossbar and NP could not knock in the rebound.

“They obviously score a nice goal off the cross there and then we had a chance to pull it back and just missed it, so it’s just the way it goes sometimes, “ North Penn co-head coach Mike Rio said. “Thought it was kind of sloppy in the first half, I was happy with the way we responded, especially at the start of the second half.

“I thought we had some good possessions, good ball movement, got the ball in their defensive third a bit and we were able to create some opportunities and just couldn’t find the back of the net.”

The Rams put a handful of good strikes at the net but most were sent right at Fiore. The senior keeper also blocked Tori Angelo’s turnaround shot out for a corner a few minutes after Kriney’s goal and also came off her line to corral a few balls before Pennridge could finish runs.

“She’s been great for us so far at the start of the season,” said Rio of Fiore. “Shot she’s facing, she’s taking care of for the most part. You know, even other things – crosses, things like that she’s not giving up rebounds. Yeah, even on the even things she’s making it look easy which is what you want your goalie to do.

“She’s been a rock for us back there, she’s playing great. Obviously her senior leadership at this point is fantastic.”

Pennridge goalie Sierra Shaeffer was not called on as much as Fiore as the Rams posted their third shutout of 2021 but the senior came through when needed. After Branch’s shot from the right side of the box hit the crossbar, the ball bounced down to Ella Broadhurt only for Shaeffer to deny the up-close shot and kept the Rams in the lead.

“We talk about that, you don’t know how many chances you’re going to get against a good team as good as them,” Rio said. “When you get them, you got to put them in the back of the net. We got a couple, especially that one in the first half, it just didn’t go.”

“But yeah, they’re great competition, they’re a great measuring stick to kind of see just how you stack up. I was really happy with a lot of what our girls did today and I thought we defended really well for most of the game. I thought we had bits where we were moving the ball forward that we looked really good too so it’s definitely a game that we can build on.”

Both teams finish their week with road SOL Colonial contests Friday. North Penn looks to stop a two-game skid at Souderton at 6:30 p.m. Pennridge, meanwhile, visits Central Bucks West at 7 p.m. The Rams have won their last 14 games since falling to West 1-0 last October.

“We need to expect that teams are going to give us our best game,” Malone said. “And I don’t know what was in everybody’s head but it definitely has to be better than that on all of our parts, myself included.”

Pennridge grabbed the 1-0 lead against the Knights at 33:12 in the first half as Malone tracked down a ball near the end line and put a cross to the front of the goal for Kriney, who used her upper body to direct the ball into the net.

“One of our principals is you make sure you get to that ball,” Malone said. “Even if you don’t know if it’s going out of bounds or not, you make sure you’re going to get there and be positive it’s not going out of bounds. So I was just kind of sticking to that and making sure that I got there – super important because that’s what it leads up to and we are able to capitalize on things like that.”

The Rams doubled their advantage midway through the second half. Grenda sliced through the defense on a run into the box then delivered a pass to Malone, who sent her shot into the right side of the goal at 20:36.

“Being composed in front of the net is something I struggled with so I was happy I was able to put that away,” Malone said. “But she does a great job getting into the box in situations like that so I was proud of her.”

Boyertown

Head coach: Bill Goddard, 22nd season

Last year’s record: 4-7-1 PAC & overall

Players to watch: Emma Beidler, Sr.; Lindsey Heisler, Sr.; Maddi Springman, Sr.; Kyra Seyler, Sr.; Audrey Swartley, Sr.; Brooklyn Smith, Sr.; Ashlyn Crawford, Sr.; Sam Devlin, Jr.; Karly Sheahan, Jr.; Alina Friz, So.

Outlook: The pendulum has swung in opposite directions the past two seasons at Boyertown. For all the good fortune of the 2019 PIAA 4A championship season, things went the other way in 2020 with injuries plaguing the top returners in a 4-7-1 year and fifth-place finish in the 7-team pandemic-altered PAC season. This fall should bring more of a return to the norm, which is Boyertown performing in the upper tier of the PAC. Junior Sam Devlin is the lone returning All-Area performer (second team in 2020) but there are new names ready to step up. Look for the Bears to be in the mix for a PAC playoff spot and push for a return to the district playoffs.

Methacton

Head coach: Bret Smith, 19th season

Last year’s record/accomplishments: 6-4-3 overall

Players to watch: Lizzie McNichol, Sr., def.; Ruby Murray, Sr., fwd.; Sarah Kenwood, Sr., mid.; Kirsten O’Brien, Sr., mid.; Shannon O’Brien, Sr., def.; Camryn Steere, Sr., def.; Mairi Smith, Jr., GK; Molly Rowland, Jr., mid.; Mackenzie Coupe, Jr., def.; Aubrey Beaugard, So., fwd.; Kendall Ricca, So., mid.; Mia Chan, So., fwd.; Anna Rees, So., def.

Outlook: The Warriors had their first winning season since 2010 during last year’s COVID-altered season and now they’re hunting for more. With the majority of the lineup returning and ‘a ton of varsity experience at almost every position’ according to coach Bret Smith, there’s reason to believe Methacton can make it so. All-Area second team defender Lizzie McNichol heads the list of returnees, alongside honorable mentions Ruby Murray, Kirsten O’Brien, Molly Rowland and goalkeeper Mairi Smith. Spots of inconsistency troubled the Warriors last season, a focus of correction in 2021. “We would play a really great game against a tough team, and then follow it up with what probably wasn’t our best effort,” Smith said. “If we can play every game the way we are capable of, we should have a very successful season.” Methacton last year was the only team to get results against both PAC heavyweights Spring-Ford and Owen J. Roberts, a sign that it can be a contender for its first trip to the PAC playoffs. Methacton missed out on the modified district playoffs last year, which is a source of motivation this fall. “The girls all feel they kind of got robbed of that playoff experience, and are really motivated to make sure they get in this year,” Smith said.

Norristown

Head coach: Robert Grim, 1st year

Last year’s record: Not available (United Ten spring season)

Players to watch: Jane Baker, Sr.; Kayliana Henry, Sr.; Nisa Kim, Sr.; Claudia Morales, Sr.; Madeline  Plummer, Sr.

Outlook: Norristown will appreciate a traditional season as much as anyone after last year when the fall season was cancelled due to pandemic precautions and a spring season as part of the United Ten league was extremely limited. With a lost year and new coach trying to bring the team together, the wins probably won’t be plentiful for the Eagles. But just having a season and having the chance to compete is an upgrade for Norristown.

Owen J. Roberts

Head coach: Joe Margusity, 27th season

Last year’s record: 10-1-1 PAC, 10-2-1 overall, PAC co-champion, District 1-4A quarterfinals

Players to watch: Morgan Weaver, Sr., def.; Kaleigh Bold, Sr., def.; Avery White, Sr., fwd.; Alexa Vogelman, Jr., fwd.; Gabbi Koury, Jr., mid.; Olivia Thompson, Jr., mid.; Sabrina Marks, So., mid.; Rachel Sbei, Jr., def.; Colby Wasson, Jr., GK.

Outlook: A season after fielding a super-young lineup and having the mixed results to match, OJR came of age in 2020. The result was a share of the PAC championship with Spring-Ford and a 10-2-1 record. The Wildcats must replace All-Area performers Emily Sands (Kutztown) and Sarah Kopec, but otherwise return the bulk of the 2020 squad. The group is led by three-time All-Area first team defender Morgan Weaver, a Boston University commit, along with the PAC’s top-scoring forward Alexa Vogelman and standout holding midfielder Gabbi Koury, both juniors. With Weaver and outside backs Kaleigh Bold and Rachel Sbei returning, it will help the transition for new starting goalkeeper Colby Wasson. All together, it makes the Wildcats the favorite in the Pioneer Athletic Conference and a team that appears capable of a deep postseason run.

Perkiomen Valley

Head coach: Kim Paulus, 17th season

Last year’s record: 3-9 PAC & overall

Players to watch: Annabelle Booker, Jr., def.; Nicole Bottomley-Lytle, Jr., fwd.; Maddie O’Donnell, Jr., mid.; Rylie Pinkerton, Jr., def.; Emma Stankunas, Jr., def.; Lily Tremba, Jr., mid.; Rain Boyd, So., mid.

Outlook: Perk Valley is often known for its defensive prowess, which suits it in 2021 with a strong center back duo leading the squad in juniors Rylie Pinkerton and Emma Stankunas (All-Area second team in 2020). “(They) bring skill, leadership, and experience; each logged a lot of minutes last year and are the heart of our team,” said coach Kim Paulus. PV has also benefitted by the addition of junior Maddie O’Donnell, who transferred from Spring-Ford after being the starting left back of the Rams’ district final team. Contending for a PAC title will be a big ask, but the Vikings are playing the long game. “Our goal is always to improve. We want to get better every day and year to year,” said Paulus. “This group is very much aware that we are building for the future, too, and are approaching this year with a positive growth mindset.”

Phoenixville

Head coach: Stewart Sherk, 3rd season

Last year’s record: 3-4 overall

Players to watch: Natalie White, Sr., def.; Ella Stout, Sr., GK; Sydney Goodhart, Sr., mid.; Catherine McNamara, Sr., def.

Outlook: The Phantoms enter the year with confidence on defense with returning multi-year starters in goalkeeper Ella Stout and defenders Natalie White and Catherine McNamara. “We will be dependent on those core players keeping us in games,” said coach Stew Sherk. The other end of the field brings much more uncertainty though. “We have struggled to find the back of the net,” Sherk said. “We are hopeful we can be creative and have players step up to get us where we need to be. But our defense and goalkeeping should keep us in some games.” Phoenixville should figure into the middle of the Frontier Division and will need to get a few results as an underdog to reach its goal of qualifying for the District 1 tournament.

Pope John Paul II

Head coach: Rachel Cecchini, 1st year

Last year’s record: 6-3-1 overall, District 1-3A semifinals

Players to watch: Erin Flanagan, Sr., def.; Sophia Hinke, Sr., fwd.; Cameron Schuler, So., fwd.

Outlook: The Golden Panthers’ pandemic-delayed start to the 2020 season resulted in a mad dash to qualify for the District 1-3A playoffs, which they accomplished and pushed to the semifinals, losing to perennial power Villa Joseph Marie. New coach Rachel Cecchini will bank on All-Area honorable mentions Erin Flanagan and Cameron Schuler to lead again, but with many new additions, including coach Cecchini, finding cohesion is a priority. “The team lost a lot of seniors last year so we are really looking to come together, learn each other’s habits, and connect,” said Cecchini.

Pottsgrove

Head coach: Steve Mellor, 10th season

Last year’s record: 1-12 PAC & overall

Players to watch: Emily Vishio, Sr., mid.; Avery Makoid, Sr., mid.; Keleigh Nihart, Jr., def.

Outlook: Timing conspired against the Falcons in 2020. The team faced a rebuild after the program’s best season ever in 2019 (16-6, District 1-3A semifinals) and had to do it playing in the pandemic-altered 7-team PAC last year that was filled with the league’s top programs. Pottsgrove managed only one win, but many more can be counted on this fall (it’s already 2-1 as of Sept. 13) with the return of the PAC’s two-division format. Senior multi-year starters Emily Vishio and Avery Makoid have the midfield in good shape but a fair few newcomers will need to step up. “We have young, inexperienced players that will have to contribute early and often for us to find success,” coach Steve Mellor said. The Falcons lead the chase pack on Upper Perkiomen for the Frontier Division and should challenge for a return to the district playoffs.

Pottstown

Head coach: Manuel A. Paez Sr., 2nd season

Last year’s record: 0-4 overall

Players to watch: Calista Daye, Sr., fwd.; Kaleigh Martin, Sr., mid.; Yasmin Paez, Sr., mid.

Outlook: A common theme for programs outside the top tier is worries over where the goals will come from. The Trojans don’t have that issue with senior forward Calista Daye, who is five goals from the school’s record. Daye and classmates Kaleigh Martin and Yasmin Paez are the core pieces of a Pottstown team that will also rely on a number of rookies. “We’re looking forward to a full schedule this year,” said coach Manny Paez. “A general improvement of our record is our goal this year.”

Spring-Ford

Head coach: Tim Raub, 2nd season

Last year’s record: 10-1-1 PAC, 13-2-1 overall, PAC co-champion, District 1-4A finalist, PIAA 4A semifinalist

Players to watch: Liv Curry, Sr., def.; Reese Kershner, Sr., mid.; Raven Wellington, Sr., def.; Claire Lanzisera, Sr., fwd.; Laura Norwood, Sr., def.; Liv Watt, Sr., mid.; Ally Garvey, So., fwd.; Erika Eickhoff, Jr., GK.

Outlook: Many pieces fell into place for Spring-Ford in 2020 in coach Tim Raub’s first season at the helm. A strong senior class featuring All-Area first team midfielders Hope Flanegin (Lehigh) and Molly Thomas (East Carolina) and second team goalkeeper Riley Wallace was bolstered by new additions like Mercury All-Area Player of the Year Liv Curry that helped Spring-Ford to a share of the PAC title and a run to the District 1-4A championship, which doubled as a PIAA semifinal in the COVID-19 pandemic-altered 2020 postseason. The follow-up won’t be so simple though. The aforementioned trio has graduated and the Rams have been hit with varied other departures via transfer (All-Area second team defender Mo O’Donnell moved to Perk Valley) and injury (All-Area first team forward Ally McVey). Spring-Ford has one of the deepest talent pools in the region, which will have to be tapped into to remain a PAC frontrunner this fall in support of their four returning starters Curry, Reese Kershner, Raven Wellington and Claire Lanzisera. Don’t expect a major dropoff from the Rams, but a lot will have to come together to match last year’s success.

Upper Merion

Head coach: Paige Jones, 1st season

Last year’s record: 2-4-2 overall

Players to watch: Whitney Steiner, Sr., def.; Brooke Olsen, Jr., def.; Julia Newby, Jr., mid.; Adriana Lamesta, So., mid.; Samantha Walmsley, So., def.; Chelsea Smith, Fr., fwd.

Outlook: It looks to be a growing year for the Vikings with only one impact senior in Whitney Steiner and the introduction of new coach Paige Jones, who takes over for Jeff Kushner. “We have a lot of young potential on the team this year as well as a lot of upperclassmen leaders,” Jones said. “With that being said, our team chemistry is incredible, but we are looking to build that more on the field.” Finishing scoring opportunities is a big uncertainty for the Vikings. In Jones’ first year the goal is to get UM trending in the right direction and consistently competitive in the PAC.

Upper Perkiomen

Head coach: Mike Freed, 13th season

Last year’s record: 5-8-0, District 1-3A playoff qualifier

Players to watch: Gabby Neal, Sr., GK; Lindsey Bieler, Sr., def.; Sam Kozminski, Sr., mid; Sara Edwards, Jr., fwd.; Erin Edwards, Jr., def.; Mary Kate Sitko, Jr., mid.; Lauren Powers, Jr., def.; Megan Cairns, So., mid.; Sarah Fisher, So., fwd.

Outlook: Everywhere you look there are teams in transition, filled with uncertainty … except Upper Perk. The Indians return eight starters and 10 players with significant varsity experience from a team that performed well in the pandemic-altered 7-team PAC and qualified for districts. There are many bright spots, led by senior goalkeeper Gabby Neal and 2020 All-Area honorable mentions defender Lauren Powers and forward Sarah Fisher. One disappointment is the absence of All-Area first team midfielder Kyra Lesko suffering an ACL injury in the spring. That injury forced UP to “revamp the formation and put some players in different positions than they normally play,” according to coach Mike Freed. The Tribe are the deepest team in the PAC Frontier and are the favorites in the division. They’ve set realistic goals of winning the Frontier, and qualifying for the PAC and District 1-3A postseasons. “If the team plays to its ability, all three are very attainable goals,” said Freed.

Others

The Hill School

Head coach: Elena Dauphinais, 1st season

Last year’s record:No season

Players to watch: Amanda McCarrick, Sr., mid.; Karly Cabot, Jr., fwd.; Chloe Moser, So., mid.

Outlook: It’s been a difficult spell for Hill after having its 2020 season cancelled and now entering a season with a third head coach in three years. The good news is that Elena Dauphinais has been there the entire time, elevating from assistant to head coach after the departure of Tim Leyland. With such limited play since 2019 the Blues are starting anew. “We have a lot of players who feel confident in the midfield, so knowing that we can try a lot of different combinations of personalities there is exciting for us to consider as we look to establish our best lineup,” Dauphinais said. Wins may come in short supply for Hill this fall against the best in the Inter-Ac and MAPL but Dauphinais is looking to build for the long haul. “We are a young team, so establishing a team culture that is poised for long-term success is our focus first and foremost,” she said.

Perkiomen School

Head coach: Justine Segear, 12th season

Last year’s record: No season

Players to watch: Cecelia Vassallo, Sr.; Cheyenne McCloud, Jr.; Chiara Plata.

Outlook: Like most teams that saw the 2020 season cancelled, just getting to play games this fall is a mark of victory. “I’m excited to have a season again this year,” said coach Justine Segear. “Last year was tough not having any games so we are just excited to be able to play again. I am looking forward to welcoming the new students and building our team chemistry.” Forward Cece Vassallo and defender Cheyenne McCloud have been impact players since they were freshmen and will be looked upon the lead the way. Perkiomen will be competing in the Penn-Jersey Blue Division where Barrack and New Foundations are expected to be their top competition.

Pennridge overcomes slow start, blanks Central Bucks South

$

EAST ROCKHILL >> It’s always a plus when a lesson learned comes along with a victory, and that’s what happened for the Pennridge girls soccer team on Wednesday.

“It took a while. We need to get into it faster,” sophomore Liv Grenda said of her team’s contest with rival Central Bucks South. “And we need to go at it and get more aggressive right from the beginning.”

It was a sluggish start for the Rams, but nevertheless a familiar ending, as Pennridge found its way to a windy (and sometimes rainy) 2-0 Suburban One League Colonial Division win on the turf at Helman Field.

Grenda scored unassisted with just 1 minute and 44 seconds left in the first half, pointing the Rams in the right direction.

“I remember after that, our team rallying around and saying ‘let’s go. We gotta keep going. We gotta stay on the right foot from here on out,'” Grenda said.

Pennridge raised its unbeaten division record to 4-0, with a contest at Truman next up, on Friday at 3:30 p.m.

South dropped to 1-4 in the division and is at Bensalem Friday at 3:30.

“(Controlling the ball) is always the goal, try to keep possession, work the ball around and then attack when we can,” said Grenda, who helped Pennridge maintain possession for most of the contest. “We always try to adapt throughout the game, see what’s going on and work around it.”

Pennridge doubled its lead about midway through the second half, when sophomore Anna Croyle scored unassisted to make it 2-0 with 24:16 to play.

The Rams came out with the win but weren’t completely satisfied.

“I feel like we can get a lot better,” Grenda said. “I feel like we’re gonna be on our way up soon.”

Sierra Shaeffer got the shutout in net for the defending 4A State Champs.

“Everyone’s expecting, and myself included, for us to be where we finished last year,” Rams coach Audrey Anderson said. “But it takes some time. We weren’t where we were at the end of last season until the end of the season. So I think we have to be patient and not panic so much early in games.”

It took nearly 40 minutes on Wednesday, but the Rams scored late in the first half and battled through.

“It’s a little frustrating but hopefully we can learn from these things and not take anything for granted and just keep going to goal,” Anderson said. “When we become a one-dimensional team, it’s easy to defend us. So we’re trying to do a little bit better with becoming a little bit more active other places on the field so we’re not so predictable with our play.

“We’re pretty smart. We have a lot of players with high soccer I.Q. that see the field really well. It’s that final third where teams are defending us up high and they tend to hang back, which makes it a little bit more difficult. But we’ll figure it out.”

Upper Dublin continues road warrior start with well-earned win over Hatboro-Horsham

$

HORSHAM >> Trying to make amends for a 2020 season that didn’t meet anyone’s expectations, the Upper Dublin girls soccer team was handed another unexpected challenge on the doorstep of the 2021 campaign.

The wrath of Hurricane Ida, including a tornado that touched down in Maple Glen, devastated parts of the township that included the high school and surrounding athletic fields, casting all of UD’s teams out on the road to start their respective seasons. Instead of splintering, the Cardinals decided they were going to get stronger from it and with a stingy defense setting the pace, have started to find their stride.

Behind a wonder strike from Alex Devers and the ever-present defending, Upper Dublin got a needed lift by picking up a hard-earned 1-0 win at Hatboro-Horsham under the lights Wednesday.

“At the start of the season, it was hard because not only were we still trying to put all the pieces together, but all of that happened on top of it,” senior defender Bliss Brenner said. “This win shows we’re going in the right direction and we’re only going to get better from here.”

Upper Dublin (2-1-3, 2-1-2 SOL Liberty) had its season-opener moved from a home game to Methacton and since then, have played six straight road games with the last five all coming as night starts. Their defense, which features seniors Brenner and Maddie Amoia on the flanks, junior Emeline Bell and freshman Erin Seabrook at center back, Alaina Sanders at defensive mid and senior Rachel Adelman in goal, has allowed just two goals on the season.

Adelman, a four-year starter in goal, battled a nagging injury last year but has come up big for her side this fall and did so again Wednesday. She had two huge saves in the first half, palming a rocket of a free kick by Hatters (2-2-1, 2-2-1 SOL Liberty) standout midfielder Emma Levin over the bar with eight minutes left and covering a tight-angled shot at the near post by Caroline Shegogue just before the horn.

Good defending in soccer is a group effort and Adelman cited that as the key to the group’s stingy start.

“We finally just clicked,” Adelman said. “Between our communication and our starting center backs, they’ve just been unbelievable and they and I just work together like clockwork.”

Scoring goals has been a struggle for both teams this fall and they both came into the match off 1-1 draws on Monday. The Hatters have a valid reason at the moment, as senior co-captain and three time first team All-SOL forward Emily Thomas is sidelined with an injury but hopes to be back no later than next week.

That didn’t stop the hosts from putting forth a good effort on Wednesday as they geared to contend with Upper Dublin’s versatile attacking threats. Levin, a sophomore co-captain who has taken on some of the responsibility offensively, created some good chances with her set pieces while senior co-captain defensive mid Sophia Liott battled hard in the middle winning numerous 50/50 balls and had a good scoring chance, ringing the post midway through the first half.

“We’ve been struggling to find the back of the net, Emily is our senior captain and our goal-scorer, so I think we got a little deflated from that,” Hatters coach Kelsey Daley said. “Emma Levin has stepped up in so many ways, she’s a tremendous player but she can’t do it all. I thought we played well, we really struggled against Abington but since then we’ve been bouncing back well, just struggling to score.”

UD coach Chuck Gesing knew his team would start to score eventually and the Cardinals couldn’t have asked for a much better strike to be the game-winner on Wednesday. Lili Kleiman created problems with her speed in the first half and Regan Rubin was able to take on and beat defenders with Olivia Hoffman, Ava Costanzo and Berkley Harmon all making good runs.

Midway through the second half, it fell to Alex Devers to break the deadlock. The junior, who started at forward, played some attacking mid and finished in a holding role, had the ball and a little space to use. With one touch, she unleashed a gorgeous curling strike from about 25 yards out that ducked under the bar and in.

“Every game, we’ve gotten better in the attack and we’re all starting to combine more and build that chemistry we’re finally understanding,” Devers said. “When it’s late in the game, everyone wants to score and I can’t take credit for winning this game. It was a team effort from Rachel all the way up to our forwards.

“It’s relief and it always feels good to score and celebrate with the team, so I think it’s definitely a step in the right direction.”

After scoring, UD went to total defense mode, although Rubin nearly made it 2-0 when she rattled the underside of the crossbar on a distance shot. Gesing thought his team was showing some tired legs at points in the match, but was extremely happy with the way the Cardinals closed things out and how they’ve handled this trying season.

Upper Dublin went just 1-8-1 in 2020, but even with a storm nobody saw coming forcing them from their nest for a while, they’re building for much more this fall.

“The difference between the senior class from when they were juniors to seniors is huge,” Gesing said. “We’re getting contributions from all over the field we weren’t getting last year. They’ve stepped up so much, the juniors are following along and everyone is coming along with us.”

Both sides now enter the crossover phase of the SOL schedule, where they will face the SOL Freedom’s teams starting Friday before hitting the second set of Liberty fixtures. Daley hoped seeing teams that aren’t as used to playing the Hatters will help get the offense going again but stressed they can’t afford to overlook anyone either.

Upper Dublin students are slated to finally be back in the high school on Monday and the players were hoping some home games would soon follow. Until then, they plan to keep taking on every test in front of them they way they have every other, all together, as a team.

“It brought us together,” Brenner said. “We already had the same goal of playing together and doing our best, so with all the challenges we faced, instead of pointing fingers or feeling sorry for ourselves, we took it to be stronger, come together and be a better team.”
